Big Sky Vacation Day 3: We’re here!

Day 3 dawned bright and sunny.  This was our day to drive into East Glacier Park where we are staying.  We had a 7 hour drive ahead of us.  We grabbed breakfast at the hotel and headed out.  But first, we needed to stop for gas, coffee, and water.  I pumped gas into the car and worked on removing more of the bugs.

It has been simply horrible with the bugs on this trip.  We scrub the bugs from the windshield and lights every chance we get the layer of debris has been incredible.  Some of the splats have been really, really large and messy.  I scrubbed for a while to remove a layer or two.  Most of the mess was gone with some remnants.

I went into the store to get coffee.  I’ve never seen a machine that defies logic.  A really nice lady with a very interesting accent helped me find the cream.  It was the most elaborate thing I’ve ever seen.  I went to the counter with my rich goodness and got in line behind the same line and her family.

This was a true ranch family.  They were in tall working boots with pants tucked in.  They had cowboy hats and kerchiefs on.  This is exactly how I would picture someone who is out breaking horses or moving cows would be dressed.  They went out and got into a truck with a horse trailer on the back.  Real Wyoming modern cowboys.

On the road, we headed north on 90 toward Billings.  From there, we worked our way north to 87 running into Great Falls.  At Buffalo, we had one stoplight.  We ran into another one in Billings.  We didn’t see another one until Great Falls.  We are talking 3 stoplights in 390 miles.  I love it out in the west.

The drive was pretty good coming out to East Glacier Park.  There still wasn’t a lot of traffic and we were making good time.  In Browning, we took note of the grocery stores and other places we might need during the stay.

Right around 5:00 CST, we arrived in East Glacier.  Town was pretty busy with people arriving and crossing the road.  We got to the street where we would be staying.  A couple of blocks down on the left, we found the house.  It was really cute with a beautiful garden spread throughout the yard.  We had arrived.

We appeared to be the first ones here.  We got in the house and it looked just like it had on the pictures.  We were definitely in the right place.  Rich moved the car to the side of the house and we began to unload our stuff into the master suite.  Being the first to arrive and having set up the arrangements, we claimed the best bedroom.

Sean and Zerah arrived a few minutes later.  Turns out that they had already gotten into town, but it was too early to check in to the house.  They drove up to Two Medicine and looked at one of the waterfalls.  We helped them get their things into the house.  We met Owen, the youngest, for the first time.  Zane, the oldest son, had grown so much.

Then we had the daunting task of grocery shopping.  Rich, Zerah, and I drove into Browning to get supplies for a few days.  The store was small, but carried enough stuff to help us get through lunches in the park and dinners at night.  We stowed our goodies into the trunk and trekked back to East Glacier.

In the meantime, Alex and Joe had arrived.  Nice Mustang!  Not mention a little red from riding in with the top down.  We juggled the remaining bedroom to Alex and Joe.  Zane and Owen got a smaller suite just off their parents’ room.  This was the large walk-in closet.  It turned out to work for nicely for them.

First night, I figured we’d go out to eat.  There was a small place just outside of East Glacier called Firebrand Ale House.  Turned out to be just a little place serving simple fare and beer.  You just never know what you’re going to get.  It was enough to handle the hungries for a while.

We came back to the house to relax and talk for a bit.  The guys got beers and sat on the front porch.  I was hoping the sunset would paint up the mountains right in front of us.  No such luck.  I guess if I want to get a nice sunset, I’ll have to go looking for it.

I attempted to write this blog, but I just wasn’t feeling it.  So it was time for bed and just settle in for the night.  No real picture from today, except for a disappointing sunset.

Tomorrow will be our first day in the park and we are headed to Two Medicine for some hiking.
