Flower beds and Dandies

I’ve had this ugly bare spot in front of the patio.  The grass grows fine, but it just had no color or appeal.  I sit out on the patio in my jake chair quite a bit.

Last year, I planted dahlias in this spot. They grew very well and made the area looked pretty.  The problem was controlling the plants.  I really needed a flower bed in this area to put flowers into and keep control of where things went.  On Sunday, I got my brick and my dirt for the new flower bed.

I had Rick help me get it from the store to the house.  I got the spade and got busy dig out where the perimeter of the bed would be.  I had a nice back line for the bed with the edge of the patio to the driveway.  It didn’t take much work to get the area ready for the bricks.  I carried the bricks one at a time and got them lined up and evened out the dirt beneath them.  They lined up really well.

I did have to call Rick out to help with the dirt.  I just could lift the 40 lbs. bag of dirt and one 40 lbs. of manure for the top.  He was nice enough to help me out.  But then again, he might want something soon.

After the dirt, I went to the basement for my treasure trove of dahlia bulbs that had been winter over down there.  I dug out the gladiolus bulbs I had bought for spring planting.  It might get nippy, but I figured they would survive.  Now grow!  I can’t wait for the plants to be to show and the produce their flowers.  It’ll look so good there this summer into the fall.  Now to keep Sascha from digging in it!

On another note, Rich received his Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket in the mail.  This is a traditional cut away jacket worn by Scottish men with their kilts for dress occasions.  When Rich heard that Rick was determined to wear his kilt for prom this year, he decided to outfit him with the perfect jacket and vest.  It’s a beautiful jacket with wonderful silver buttons.  He’ll look for nice for any of the weddings coming up.

After dinner and a trip to the European grocery store for Easter supplies, Rich made Rick dress up in the full getup so that he could make sure the jacket really looked alright for the prom.  Rick was so handsome in his Scots wear.  We had a discussion on whether he should where the sporran with it for the prom.  The sporran is a man’s crotch purse.  In this case, Rick’s is rabbit fur and leather.  It was decided that he didn’t have to wear.  He has pockets in the jacket and vest.

Now we just have to verify the whole attire with his date for prom.  Rick assures me he has talked to Jordan about what he wants to wear.  She’s coming over tomorrow, so I’ll get a chance to ask her.  I get to try and guide her on a choice of dress and outfit so that they match.  I have my Campbell tartan sash that matches Rick’s kilt.  They would look lovely together.
