{"id":1724,"date":"2013-04-28T21:32:26","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T02:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=1724"},"modified":"2013-04-28T21:32:26","modified_gmt":"2013-04-29T02:32:26","slug":"flood-waters-are-receding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=1724","title":{"rendered":"Flood waters are receding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This has been an interesting week.\u00a0 After almost 6 inches of rain over the short course of three or so days, we were flooded here.\u00a0 This turned out to be the highest rate that the Fox River has ever seen on record.\u00a0 The river finally crested at 7.48 feet. \u00a0That meant that the channels around us were flooded as well.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the 20<sup>th<\/sup>, we went to Michigan to help Jon celebrate his upcoming 50<sup>th<\/sup> birthday.\u00a0 With a cookout at the 40, we celebrated with BBQ and the fixins.\u00a0 The best part was all of the family who gathered.\u00a0 It is always good to see Busia.\u00a0 Irene and her family came up from Fort Wayne and Ohio.\u00a0 Donna and Norm came in from Chicago.\u00a0 They all have such a good time.\u00a0 They are fun to be around.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, we returned to find the water a little deep over the roads.\u00a0 There are barricades to warn people to stay out of the area.\u00a0 River Road through the state park is closed, cutting us off from McHenry. It seems a little strange driving around it every day to get into the neighborhood.\u00a0 The best signs are in the neighborhood though.\u00a0 Basically, it said if you weren\u2019t a resident, you would be arrested.<\/p>\n<p>We were high and dry though.\u00a0 The basement sprung a leak for a day or so which meant that we were vacuuming up water.\u00a0 Rich got up early on Thursday to find the basement filling with water.\u00a0 There was a considerable puddle in front of the bar.\u00a0 He quickly moved furniture and got the area cleared.\u00a0 With a little Yankee ingenuity, he built a jig to dam up water and suck it out through a hose to the sump pump.\u00a0 Luckily, it went from sucking water out every 15 minutes down to an hour at a time.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve talked about fixing the cracks in the basement a couple times, but the leaks were never that bad.\u00a0 I got motivated and found a company.\u00a0 I called them and set up an appointment for them to come out and give us an estimate.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t sound too busy on the phone.\u00a0 On Friday, Glen came out and took a look.\u00a0 Rich heard what he wanted to hear.\u00a0 We set up an appointment to get the work done.\u00a0 It was time.<\/p>\n<p>The weather improved, so Rick started painting the garage.\u00a0 We borrowed scaffolding from Dave.\u00a0 This would make reaching the 10 foot ceilings easier.\u00a0 The primer went up and he started the white paint on the ceiling and halfway down the wall.\u00a0 The other half of the walls will be blue gray.\u00a0 It should look like a real nice workspace and home for Sally when it is done.\u00a0 We have our fingers crossed that he can complete it by next Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>So plans continue for the annual Derby party here.\u00a0 The flood waters should be gone.\u00a0 Rich is still planning to BBQ up brisket, ribs, and chicken.\u00a0 I have stocked up on food and people are planning to bring things to help out.\u00a0 Oh yeah, the Zurekbrau is brewed and kegged.\u00a0 All we need are a few good people to drink it.\u00a0 We\u2019ll see who shows up.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday evening, our department was treated to drinks and foods at a local establishment.\u00a0 We went over to enjoy some time with our co-workers.\u00a0 While we were talking to people, we came across a couple of new people.\u00a0 Turns out, a couple of engineers from Krakow are in Schaumburg working in the bay and acting as liaison for products from Krakow.\u00a0 I found out I actually know them.\u00a0 We have worked together by phone for a few years.\u00a0 I guess I\u2019m well known in Krakow as well.\u00a0 The question everyone there asks is if I speak Polish!\u00a0 They see the Polish name and hope that I do.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I only married Polish.\u00a0 We\u2019ve invited Marcin and Aneta to the Derby party.\u00a0 Thought it might be fun for them and good me to reinforce my connections to Krakow.<\/p>\n<p>Rich is organizing a reunion of people who served with the same group he was with in Germany.\u00a0 Someone had started a Facebook page for the related groups.\u00a0 They have been exchanging photos and memories.\u00a0 Someone suggested that they meet up for dinner somewhere.\u00a0 San Antonio came up in the conversation.\u00a0 That\u2019s as far as it got.\u00a0 Rich decided to take on the task of really organizing dinner.\u00a0 Since Rose lives in San Antonio, he went with the suggestion to do it there.\u00a0 A web site went up on Zurekbrau with an email list.\u00a0 One of the guy who is in San Antonio is checking out German restaurants in the area.\u00a0 It looks like we are on for July 6.\u00a0 Hang on, Rose, we are coming down for the 4<sup>th<\/sup>!<\/p>\n<p>Vacations are planned and we are adding these as we go.\u00a0 I might have brought this up before, but I am excited for it all to start.\u00a0 I\u2019m working on adding more.<\/p>\n<p>We start out in June for Chicago Bluesfest.\u00a0 We are staying downtown.\u00a0 It\u2019ll be the Bluesfest during the day and trying to hit some of the places we\u2019ve wanted to go in the evening.\u00a0 We are identifying all the brewpubs, bars, and joints that we\u2019ve wondered about.\u00a0 Should be a busy few days.<\/p>\n<p>The following week, we head out to Kansas City.\u00a0 My favorite blues band, Trampled Under Foot, is holding a release party for their next album.\u00a0 Rich put in enough to their Kickstarter account to get invited to the party.\u00a0 They sent out the date and place.\u00a0 Now we just have to show up and listen to the music.\u00a0 I love the name of the bar where we are headed.\u00a0 It\u2019s called The Trouser Mouse.\u00a0 More to come on this one.<\/p>\n<p>July will find us in San Antonio for the 4<sup>th<\/sup> of July.\u00a0 We will be attending the first reunion for Rich\u2019s group from the Air Force.\u00a0 Should be fun as well.\u00a0 It\u2019ll be nice to Rose and hang out with her for a while.<\/p>\n<p>In August, B. B. King and Peter Frampton are coming Aurora for a concert.\u00a0 I\u2019ve wanted to see B.B. for a while.\u00a0 Peter is an extra.\u00a0 I purchased my tickets and ready to go.\u00a0 I\u2019m hoping for good weather as this is an outdoor concert.\u00a0 More to come on this, too.<\/p>\n<p>In September, we head down to the Great Smoky Mountains for a little hiking and some mountain views.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a while since I\u2019ve been down there.\u00a0 Rich hasn\u2019t been.\u00a0 Once again, we are hoping for good weather since we plan to be outside a lot.\u00a0 Big question is: bears or no bears.\u00a0 There\u2019s a good bet of seeing at least one.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s time to start another week.\u00a0 I have deliveries this week.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t think that will mean my workload will get easier.\u00a0 Might be time to think about expanding the team again.\u00a0 We\u2019ve definitely got more than enough work to go around, and then some.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure
