{"id":2017,"date":"2013-07-03T22:28:33","date_gmt":"2013-07-04T03:28:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=2017"},"modified":"2013-07-05T14:12:24","modified_gmt":"2013-07-05T19:12:24","slug":"day-2-throw-a-roll-at-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=2017","title":{"rendered":"Day 2: Throw a Roll at Me!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Darn, I got up too early this morning.\u00a0 I meant to sleep in, but it just didn\u2019t happen.\u00a0 I got up about 7:00.\u00a0 This was all without the benefit of a wet nose and a warm paw.\u00a0 Where was Sascha?\u00a0 Oh yeah, at home waking up Rick.<\/p>\n<p>We got moving and loaded up the car.\u00a0 Traffic through St Louis wasn\u2019t too bad.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I missed my turn and the GPS had figure out how to get back there.\u00a0 Luckily, it wasn\u2019t hard and we were on our way again.<\/p>\n<p>Rich was almost true to his word.\u00a0 He read his newspaper on his table most of the morning.\u00a0 I drove at my usual speed and dodged all the big trucks.\u00a0 There were some interesting ones.\u00a0 You can tell the trucks that are hauling military family cars.\u00a0 They are all mismatched and have plates for all over the country.\u00a0 I only saw a couple of those. One carrier had old cars from the 40s, 50s, and 60s.\u00a0 I assumed these were cars for an auction.<\/p>\n<p>We came across a billboard that had us really laughing.\u00a0 There is a town called Bourbon in Missouri.\u00a0 We liked the name a lot. \u00a0It would be cool to say you lived in Bourbon.\u00a0 However, I think some of their advertising could stand some editing.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the sign we saw:<\/p>\n<p>Bourbon Family Center<\/p>\n<p>Firearms and ammunitions\u00a0 Beer-related beverages; Hand-dipped ice cream for the kids<\/p>\n<p>Now what kind of family center is this that they have firearms!\u00a0 Beer and ice cream go together?\u00a0 We laughed and talked about all that meant.\u00a0 Must be some kind of town.<\/p>\n<p>We made it in Springfield, Missouri and saw signs for Lambert\u2019s Restaurant.\u00a0 If you watch shows on the Food Network, you would have seen Lambert\u2019s being shown on a couple of them.\u00a0 Their motto is: Home of the Thrown Roll.\u00a0 They do actually throw rolls at you during dinner.\u00a0 I\u2019ll get that.<\/p>\n<p>We pulled up to people waiting all over the place.\u00a0 Because it was famous, we figured we would stay and eat her, just this once.\u00a0 The wait was up to 50 minutes.\u00a0 Wait the hey, we\u2019ll only be here once.\u00a0 I think we really waited for maybe 30 minutes or so.<\/p>\n<p>They were called out tables for 5, 7, 12,and 20.\u00a0 This is crazy.\u00a0 Who can seat 20 people comfortably.\u00a0 It also meant that the number of people outside would dwindle down.\u00a0 But then new people would show up!\u00a0 Pretty soon, our name was called.<\/p>\n<p>We waded through the people when our name was called.\u00a0 Our table was packed in tight, but we managed to squeeze into the booth.\u00a0 The place was crazy.\u00a0 Our server, Cassie, came by pretty quickly and took our drink order.\u00a0 They came back in these huge mugs.\u00a0 You know that really oversized coffee mugs that you can buy at some of the quickie marts?\u00a0 Those mugs.\u00a0 I guess they only wanted to make one trip for drinks.<\/p>\n<p>We ordered up.\u00a0 Now this is a chicken place, so I can the chicken livers.\u00a0 Rich got the ham steak.\u00a0 Our food came out and looked pretty good.\u00a0 I mistakenly got brown gravy and not white gravy.\u00a0 That didn\u2019t hurt the taste much.\u00a0 Rich\u2019s meal came in a huge fry pan.\u00a0 The ham steak filled the entire pan!\u00a0 I\u2019ve had better, but it was good for being so hungry.<\/p>\n<p>While we were eating, servers walked around with side dishes that you could add to your meal for free.\u00a0 There were fried potatoes, fried okra, and tomato and paste.\u00a0 The guy finally made to our aisle with the rolls. You hold up your hand and he can pretty much hit you with a roll from almost the length of the aisle.\u00a0 It was pretty cool.\u00a0 The rolls are yeast and very solid.\u00a0 They were warm and the butter melted right away.<\/p>\n<p>Rich got a taste of the sorghum for his roll.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t know what to expect.\u00a0 It\u2019s made from a type of cane sugar and has a slightly burnt flavor to it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think he liked the sticky mess that it makes as you are trying to eat it.\u00a0 The kids all like it though.<\/p>\n<p>After a 2 hour break, we finally got back on the road.\u00a0 This was going to make us very late for arriving into our destination.\u00a0 But we had to make it through all of the toll roads first.\u00a0 44 is a mess with tolls.\u00a0 We managed to pay the first one since it was manned.\u00a0 The other tolls were trust and coins.\u00a0 Turns out, we didn\u2019t have enough change.\u00a0 We did everything but one and ended up paying 65 cents out of 80 cents.\u00a0 Guess we\u2019ll have to send them the rest.<\/p>\n<p>I have to say, it seemed like we were having trouble figuring out where we should be going.\u00a0 The GPS was more confusing that helpful.\u00a0 We missed a turn in Tulsa and ended up going down some road I wasn\u2019t sure about.\u00a0 It definitely wasn\u2019t the way I had planned to go.\u00a0 We managed to finally get to the original location after some trouble.<\/p>\n<p>We needed to stop off at a Target or something to pick up a couple of items.\u00a0 We managed to get off the tolls and take some surface roads to get to a store.\u00a0 We thought the walk would do us some good.\u00a0 We had been in the car for a couple of hours now.\u00a0 We had some luck and got the things that we needed.\u00a0 Now to get down to Mcalester to our next overnight stop.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, this toll road was manned (or womaned, I should say) and we could pay our fair share with dollar bills.\u00a0 This took us into one of the Indian reservations.\u00a0 It was a Choctaw reservation.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t see any trading posts though.\u00a0 I doubt Rich would let me stop.<\/p>\n<p>The speed limit was great.\u00a0 I was flying along doing 80 in a 75.\u00a0 I like speed.\u00a0 I should have been the first Danica Patrick and not her.\u00a0 Is it too late to get into Indy racing?\u00a0 I\u2019m not much for Nascar.<\/p>\n<p>We got to Mcalester, where the speed limit when from 65 to 35 in the blink of an eye.\u00a0 I think I saw speed trap written all over the back of that sign.\u00a0 The town is really neat.
