{"id":521,"date":"2012-02-08T19:08:17","date_gmt":"2012-02-09T01:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=521"},"modified":"2012-02-08T19:08:17","modified_gmt":"2012-02-09T01:08:17","slug":"a-new-skill-ive-been-doing-it-wrong-all-this-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=521","title":{"rendered":"A New Skill:  &#8220;I&#8217;ve been doing it wrong all this time!?!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\">One of my three loyal readers cornered me about writing my next entry.\u00a0 I said that I hadn&#8217;t done anything exciting lately.\u00a0 Even Sascha has been doing the same things.\u00a0 Granted, they are cute things, but definitely not anything to write about.<\/div>\n<p>Rich came up with an article and link from TED Ideas Worth Spreading.\u00a0 TED stands for Technology, Education, and Design.\u00a0 Rich found out that he&#8217;s being tying his shoelaces wrong.\u00a0 Sorry, he&#8217;s been doing it incorrectly.\u00a0 Rich can&#8217;t possibly be wrong.\u00a0 That&#8217;s all I heard for a couple of days, &#8220;I&#8217;ve been tying my shoes wrong for the last 46 years!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So according to Terry Moore on the TED site, there are two forms of a knot:\u00a0 a weak form and strong form.\u00a0 From an early age, we&#8217;ve been taught to tie our shoes using the weak form of the knot.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why your shoes don&#8217;t stay tied!\u00a0 Who knew?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of you out there might have found out about this already and didn&#8217;t share that information with the rest of us.\u00a0 This means that we&#8217;ve been walking all over our shoelaces for nothing.\u00a0 To prevent the flapping laces, we&#8217;ve resorted to tying the laces in double knots to keep them in places.\u00a0 That is if we are lucky to have enough string to tie a double knot.<\/p>\n<p>The one except to this appears to be my son, Rick.\u00a0 He tied his shoelaces the first day he got his tennis shoes and has never had to retie them.\u00a0 Turns out, he never unties the laces to take the shoes\u00a0off or on.\u00a0 The knots are now glued into places by dirt, grime, and the occasional dampness from a passing rain shower.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, back to the strong form of a shoelace knot.\u00a0 Rich being an engineer just had test the theory behind the strong knot.\u00a0 The other morning, he put on his shoes for work.\u00a0 He tied one shoe with the strong knot and the other shoe with the double knot.\u00a0 Later that evening, he came in the door shouting, &#8220;It&#8217;s still tied!&#8221;\u00a0 Sure enough, the strong knot held up all day.<\/p>\n<p>Rich also had to share this information with his co-workers. He told his boss about the experiment.\u00a0 Phil tried the same thing.\u00a0 Now they both had one shoe tied with the strong knot and one double tied.\u00a0 So this experiment is now known as &#8220;time tested.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This morning, Rich tied both shoes with the strong knot.\u00a0 At the end of the day, they remained tied without having to adjust or retie.\u00a0 Once again, he shared his experiment with some of the other guys at work.\u00a0 One co-worker remarked that Rich was tying his laces backwards.\u00a0 &#8220;No,&#8221; Rich says, &#8220;I&#8217;m tying them better.&#8221;\u00a0 I have to admit, it does look backwards from what we know.<\/p>\n<p>I love to wear my clogs, which requires so little maintenance.\u00a0 However, I&#8217;ve actually started tying my tennis shoes this way.\u00a0 They are comfortable and not binding, but not coming lose while I walk either.\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking that my hiking boots could benefit from this treatment while I&#8217;m on vacation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>OK, so a picture is worth a thousand words.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t write a thousand words (only 619), and now here are the pictures.<\/p>\n<figure
