{"id":672,"date":"2012-04-11T18:58:25","date_gmt":"2012-04-11T23:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=672"},"modified":"2012-04-11T18:58:25","modified_gmt":"2012-04-11T23:58:25","slug":"that-roof-over-our-heads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=672","title":{"rendered":"That roof over our heads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In recent weeks, we&#8217;ve had quite a bit of windy weather.\u00a0 Windy isn&#8217;t out of the norm for us here, but the type of wind is.\u00a0 It has been almost gale force at times.\u00a0 So much so that we&#8217;ve lost a few shingles and had some others that are literally flapping in the breeze.\u00a0 This sent the guys up on the roof to handle repairs.<\/p>\n<p>This also meant that I had to get busy and arrange for estimates on replacing the roof.\u00a0 This was my chance to check out the metal roof that I&#8217;ve wanted for this house.\u00a0 I called up one of the places that I&#8217;ve looked at for this work.\u00a0 They agreed to do an estimate for us.\u00a0 Well, I had a little more sticker shock than I thought.\u00a0 Rich immediately cancelled out the idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, we don&#8217;t know how long we plan to stay here.\u00a0 Maybe another 10 years.\u00a0 I keep hoping to find a job opportunity that will take me to warmer weather.\u00a0 Rich keeps hoping for Montana.\u00a0 Either way, the cost of the metal roof was more than we wanted to think about.\u00a0 So I contacted the guys who did our gutter and trim work back in the fall.\u00a0 I had talked to them then about a new roof.\u00a0 They were more than willing to come out.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Pete came out with his samples and his estimate book.\u00a0 We stood around on the deck talking about possibilities.\u00a0 I was definitely holding our for some color on the roof.\u00a0 No black, brown, or gray here.\u00a0 I preferred red, but Rich just couldn&#8217;t picture it.\u00a0 So we went with deep forest green.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pete got all the measurements, figured up the square footage, punched in some numbers, and wrote up an estimate.\u00a0 Now that was a number we could live with.\u00a0 We get a new roof and I got to add some color to the drab.\u00a0 Rich is still a little worried about the green, but I think it will be wonderful.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I filled out the paperwork for the building permit and went up to the village hall to talk to the building inspector for the village.\u00a0 Ray seemed all right with the papers and we should have our permit this weekend.\u00a0 Pete is planning to start work at the end of next week.\u00a0 At least Rich and Rick won&#8217;t be up on the roof trying to glue down shingles for\u00a0a long time to come.<\/p>\n<p>While I had Pete in the house, I took him to that horrible little pink, white, and gold bathroom across from Rick&#8217;s room.\u00a0 We talked possibilities.\u00a0 I just wasn&#8217;t hearing everything I wanted though.\u00a0 I guess we&#8217;ll have to work up to the remodel of that room.\u00a0 I have some thoughts on what Pete would do and I can take them to my magic drawing board in Pinterest and work on them.<\/p>\n<p>For now, it &#8216;s just a roof.
