{"id":966,"date":"2012-06-08T21:12:26","date_gmt":"2012-06-09T02:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=966"},"modified":"2012-06-08T21:12:26","modified_gmt":"2012-06-09T02:12:26","slug":"vacation-day-17-almost-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zurekbrau.com\/blogs\/richsblog\/?p=966","title":{"rendered":"Vacation Day 17:  Almost Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yet again, Rich woke up.<\/p>\n<p>From our drive yesterday, you remember that we beat it out of Colorado ahead of some pretty nasty storms.\u00a0 We had heard on the TV that tornados had touched down outside of Ft Collins and Greeley.<\/p>\n<p>Our hotel for the evening turned out to be a renovated thing from the 1950s.\u00a0 I was reluctant to go in, but this is where we had reservations and everyone was standing in line.\u00a0 I signed in and got the key for the room.\u00a0 It was an okay room for the night.\u00a0 You would think that a Best Western would be safe.<\/p>\n<p>There was a lady at the desk when I got there.\u00a0 It was hard to tell what she looked like.\u00a0 She was small in stature with a ton of white hair and dark clothes.\u00a0 She spoke kind of slurred and in funny tones.\u00a0 She apparently was getting two rooms, one for herself and one for her driver.\u00a0 That must have been him out in the Mercedes outside.\u00a0 She said they were driving from Connecticut to California.\u00a0 Was she someone famous or just strange?<\/p>\n<p>This morning, we went out to walk down to breakfast and the parking lot had several vehicles from the National Center for Atmospheric Research.\u00a0 These are the guys who are the professional storm chasers.\u00a0 Dr. Josh Wurman was sitting off to the side with someone and a computer going over data.\u00a0 Dr. Wurman invented the Doppler radar on wheels to chase storms.\u00a0 You might know him better from the show called Stormchasers on the Discovery channel.\u00a0 He\u2019s the guy that gets to tells Sean what to do and usually yells at him.\u00a0 All I got were pictures of the trucks, but no people.<\/p>\n<p>We had what breakfast we could find at the hotel and headed out for the next stop.\u00a0 The road construction was pretty frequent and that slowed up down some.\u00a0 We stopped for gas and lunch, but kept moving east.\u00a0 Tonight, we planned to stay in Des Moines, IA.\u00a0 This was expected to be a 7 hour drive.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived to find that our hotel was very nice with all the amenities that we had planned.\u00a0 Then it was time for dinner.\u00a0 We had been through here last year on our way to New Mexico and found this BBQ place with awesome food.\u00a0 Rich liked it for the pickles.\u00a0 Cactus Bob\u2019s was off the next exit and we headed down the road to check it out again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before we got in the door, we could smell the food.\u00a0 It was heavenly.\u00a0 However, we had to then decide how hungry we were and what we could eat.\u00a0 I got the The Big Pig, which was a pork sandwich with beans and baked apples.\u00a0 Rick just got chicken strips because he wasn\u2019t that hungry.\u00a0 Rich got chicken strips and ribs with slaw and apples AND a chili.\u00a0 I ate all of mine.\u00a0 It was still awesome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rich just had to buy a jar of their pickled pickles.\u00a0 He assured me they were sweet and not dill.\u00a0 I took one bit and about spit it out. I hate dill pickles!\u00a0 I threw the other half on his tray.\u00a0 I think he thought I was throwing it at him.
